About Buccal Mucosa Cancer

A common site in tobacco and areca-nut users.

The inner lining of the cheek is one of the most frequent sites of oral cancer in India, and is closely linked to chewing tobacco, gutkha, and areca nut (supari). White or red patches, an ulcer that does not heal, or stiffness that limits mouth opening should be examined.

Surgery removes the tumour with surrounding tissue and, when needed, part of the jaw or the overlying skin. The cheek lining is then rebuilt, often with a flap of tissue, so the mouth can still open well. Stopping tobacco and areca nut is one of the most important steps in recovery.
