About Tongue Reconstruction

Restoring a tongue that can move.

After part of the tongue is removed, what remains needs enough bulk and freedom of movement for clear speech and safe swallowing. Small defects can be closed directly; larger ones are usually rebuilt with soft, thin tissue, commonly from the forearm or thigh.

The tissue is transferred with its blood vessels, which are connected in the neck. Recovery includes speech and swallowing therapy, which helps the remaining tongue adapt and make the most of the reconstruction.
