About Oral Cancer Surgery

Removing the disease, protecting function.

Surgery for oral cancer aims to remove the tumour with a margin of healthy tissue around it. When the disease may have spread, lymph nodes in the neck are often treated during the same operation, guided by scans and the biopsy result.

Because the mouth is used for speaking, chewing, and swallowing, the plan also covers how the area will be rebuilt and what recovery will look like. Some people need radiotherapy or other treatment afterwards; this is discussed with the wider cancer team.
