About Cheek Reconstruction
Surgery for cancer of the cheek can leave a gap in the inner lining, the muscle, and sometimes the skin. If the lining is not replaced, scarring can tighten the cheek and limit how far the mouth opens.
Depending on its size, the defect may be closed with nearby tissue or with a microvascular flap that replaces the lining — and the skin as well, when needed. Mouth-opening exercises after healing help keep the cheek supple.
